ABADÁ-Capoeira East Vancouver shares its name and philosophy with the international Associação Brasileira de Apoio e Desenvolvimento da Arte-Capoeira (ABADÁ-Capoeira) non-profit organization. The name translates into English as the “Brazilian Association for the Support and Development of the Art of Capoeira”. ABADÁ-Capoeira’s main objective is to promote capoeira and Brazilian culture, and to use it as a vehicle for social integration and individual growth.
ABADÁ-Capoeira was founded in 1988 by Mestre Camisa (José Tadeu Carneiro Cardoso), and is led by a group of 9 Mestres and 16 Mestrandos, who have dedicated their lives to the art of capoeira. The organization is based in Rio de Janeiro, and has approximately 70,000 students in over 60 countries worldwide.
ABADÁ-Capoeira is distinguished from other capoeira organizations by its worldwide growth as well as its style, standards, and philosophy. Mestre Camisa’s vision for ABADÁ-Capoeira is to create an organization that strives to move forward by keeping one foot in the past and one foot in the future, maintaining tradition while adapting to society’s changes.

ABADÁ-Capoeira believes that the study of capoeira involves dedication to all aspects of the art, including technical mastery of the physical elements of capoeira; constant evolution of technique to improve efficiency and prevent injury; understanding of and reverence for capoeira’s rich history; competence and knowledge of the music, instruments, and games of capoeira; and participation in the larger capoeira community, in Brazil and throughout the world.
