Thinking about trying capoeira, but have a burning question or concern? Check out our FAQs, or get in touch with us!

What can I expect for my first class?

Expect to work out, sweat, and have fun! Wear comfortable workout clothes and bring a water bottle. We train barefoot, but you can wear shoes if you need to. We recommend low-profile shoes e.g. training shoes.

How much is the fee?

The drop-in fee for all our classes is $15. Your first class is by donation at our Keefer St. location. Teens also train for free at our Keefer St. location. We also have monthly registration fees which offer great savings.

I’m too unfit/weak/uncoordinated/old! Can I still do capoeira?

Absolutely! We are committed to providing a welcoming atmosphere for anyone who wants to be a part of our community. Your instructor and other students will work with you to adjust the movements based on your comfort and experience level. Please note that if you have any existing medical conditions or concerns, you should check with your doctor before starting an exercise program.

What are the benefits of capoeira?

Capoeira is a great way to increase your overall fitness, including endurance, strength, cardio, flexibility, agility, reaction time, and coordination. The movements, games, and music of capoeira also help develop the mind. Other benefits include a supportive community, improved self-confidence, better health and well-being, learning another language, better musicality, unique cultural experiences, and life-long friendships.

Will I have to fight someone in my first class? I’ve never done any martial arts before.

Partnered work is very important for capoeira training, so you can expect to work on drills and to play with other students. That being said, the emphasis in a capoeira game is on working with your partner to create a dynamic, interactive, and beautiful game. Students are also expected to keep the safety of others and themselves in mind, and adjust their game based on the experience level of their partner.

I looked up capoeira on Youtube. I could never do something like that!
Beginners are often drawn to the flips and cartwheels in capoeira. However, as with any martial art, the basics are fundamental to our development as capoeiristas. Beginners start with basic defensive and offensive moves, and all students consistently work on the basics no matter how many years they have been training. Many of our students started with little to no previous experience with martial arts or any physical activity.

I came to my first class last night and now I can’t walk. Help!

Don’t worry, this is perfectly normal as capoeira training is a whole body workout! Try to do some light exercise (walking, jogging) and stretch often. The soreness should only last for a day or two. Making sure you follow the stretching routine at the end of every class also helps prevent muscle soreness.
